Not every Adviser needs to become a specialist. But every Adviser needs a strategy for specialist advice.
I was recently asked to write a blog on a topic that feels particularly relevant to me in my role as Training and Capability Manager here at Cornerstone. For those who know me well, you’ll know I could probably have written about half a dozen different topics. I’m a firm believer that effective learning and development has a vital role to play in every single part of the network.
Yet over the last six months, one subject has consistently found its way into my conversations, regardless of where they started. Whether I’ve been speaking to lender BDMs, running training sessions, attending industry events, or simply talking to firms across the network, everything always seems to come back to the exact same question:
How should Advisers respond to increasingly specialist client needs?
The market has shifted
Specialist advice is no longer something that sits on the edge of the market; it’s increasingly sitting right at the heart of it. The opportunities are already appearing in day-to-day client conversations, and as Advisers, we face an important decision: develop the knowledge to spot and support those opportunities, or risk falling behind as the market continues to evolve.
The real challenge is that most Advisers will encounter specialist opportunities long before they consider themselves ‘specialist Advisers’:
- Later Life Lending: A client approaching retirement who needs tailored later-life options.
- Complex Income: A self-employed applicant presenting a nuanced, non-standard income case.
- Vulnerable Customers: A customer requiring extra, tailored support throughout the process.
The question is no longer whether these situations will arise. The question is whether you’ll recognise them when they do and know what happens next.
Identifying your route
Again, not every Adviser needs to become a specialist. But every Adviser does need enough baseline knowledge to identify specialist opportunities, understand the potential client needs, and make informed decisions about how those cases should be handled.
When these cases pop up, there are two great ways to handle them:
1. The Referral Route: Developing the confidence to recognise specialist opportunities early and refer clients directly to a dedicated specialist.
2. The Direct Advice Route: Building the expertise, skills, and qualifications needed to advise in those areas yourself and expand your own proposition.
Both approaches can deliver excellent client outcomes.
The risk lies in doing neither
Failing to recognise specialist opportunities can mean missed client needs, missed business growth, and missed opportunities to strengthen long-term client relationships.
As the market continues to evolve, having a clear strategy for specialist advice is becoming less of a competitive advantage and more of a professional necessity. Doing nothing isn’t really a route at all , because whether you’re referring specialist cases or advising on them yourself, the one thing Advisers can no longer afford to do is ignore them.
How we support you at Cornerstone
At Cornerstone, we recognise that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. Not every firm has the same ambitions, and not every Adviser wants to develop in the exact same direction. That’s why we don’t believe in treating every Adviser or firm the same.
Our role is to provide the foundations, structure, and L&D support to help you make the choice that works for your business:
- Targeted Training & Development: Helping Advisers sharpen their skills to spot specialist opportunities the moment they arise.
- Clear Growth Pathways: Providing structured support for those who want to build deep expertise in specialist areas and expand their proposition further.
Ultimately, the route you choose is completely yours. The question isn’t whether specialist opportunities will show up in your practice, it’s what you’ll do when they do.
